A Fine And Ornate Infantry Officer's Sword Of 1803 Pattern Presented To Lt. Col. Hugh Rose Of Kilravock By The Nairnshire Corps Of Volunteers In 1808 By J. W. & T. Johnston, No.12 Newcastle Str., Strand, London, Dated 1808 With curved fullered blade (old light rust patination) double-edged toward the point and etched 'J.J. Runkel, Solingen' along the back at the forte, one side etched with designs of symmetrical foliage involving the figure of Victory, martial trophies, post-1801 royal arms and mottoes, and the figure of Britannia, and along the other with further foliage, the figure of Justice, the presentation inscription and 'Warranted' above the maker's details, ormolu hilt of regulation pattern, the guard on each side set with a cast, pierced and chased Classical trophy of arms, knuckle-guard pierced and chased with a crowned 'GR' cypher surmounted by a silver thistle within a roped border, grip engraved with foliate borders and set on each side with a silver martial trophy, lion-head pommel with back-piece in one, and retaining its red cord and silver bullion sword-knot (tassel frayed), in original fish skin-covered scabbard with border engraved ormolu mounts all applied with cast and chased silver Classical martial trophies en suite with the hilt, engraved and gilt suspension mounts, and retaining most of its original gilding 81.5 cm. blade The presentation inscription reads: 'PRESENTED By the Nairnshire CORPS of Volunteer INFANTRY To LIEUTENANT COL.N HUGH ROSE of KILRAVOCK their Commandant as a Testimony of their ESTEEM and Regards for him as an OFFICER and a GENTLEMAN, Nairn 18th January 1808' Footnotes: Hugh Rose, 20th Baron of Kilravock (1781-1827) was a Member of Parliament for Nairnshire and Chief of Clan Rose. He joined the Inverness Militia in 1802 as Major and in 1806 was promoted Commandant and Colonel of the Nairn Voluntary Infantry.
