J. Nina Miller Davidson (British, 1895-1972) Procession to an Eastern Temple signed and dated 'J. Nina Miller 1925' (lower right) watercolour 66 x 87.5cm (26 x 34 7/16in). Footnotes: An artist's label on the reverse lists the artist's address in Hamilton and gives the work's title as 'The Captive'. Having studied fine art at the Glasgow School of Art between 1914-1919, Miller Davidson went on to study mural painting between 1920-1922. Despite this training to work on a grand scale, upon graduating she established herself as a sought after watercolourist and illustrator. In particular, it is the latter from which she would build much of her career, being employed to illustrate many books and magazines. The present work highlights both the graphic quality of her work and the great skill she had in the medium of watercolour. Miller Davidson exhibited several times at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, and at the Royal Scottish Society of Watercolour Painters.
