Chintamoni Kar (1915-2005) Untitled (Vase of flowers) signed 'C. Kar 48' lower left oil on canvas, framed 40 x 29cm (15 3/4 x 11 7/16in). Footnotes: Provenance Property from a private collection, England. 'Chintamoni Kar, a distinguished artist of the modern Indian art movement, is renowned for his evocative and deeply expressive works. His paintings often explore themes of human struggle, emotion, and spirituality, rendered with a striking use of form and colour. Kar's style combines elements of abstraction with a profound sensitivity to the human condition, creating a unique visual language that resonates with viewers on multiple levels. His work reflects a mastery of technique and an ability to convey complex emotions and narratives through dynamic compositions. As a key member of the Bengal School and later a prominent figure in the modern art movement, Kar's contributions continue to be celebrated for their artistic innovation and emotional depth. Untitled (Vase of Flowers) is unique in his oeuvre as it was painted during his sojourn in England in 1940s. Kar studied at the Académie de la Grande-Chaumière, and at the atelier of Italian sculptor Victor Giovanelli from 1938-39, which transformed his outlook and approach to art. This coupled with his disenchantment with the Bengal school and the paintings and sculptures he saw whilst in Europe, led to a new style, evidenced in Untitled (Vase of Flowers). The painting exemplifies Kar's masterful command of colour and composition. With its delicate brushwork, he captures the essence of the floral forms in a way that blends realism with subtle abstract quality. The careful arrangement of the flowers in the vase is rendered with meticulous detail, highlighting the artist's keen observational skills and deep appreciation for the natural world.
