Footnotes: Provenance Property from a private collection, USA. Acquired from the artist in the early 2000s. Ghulam Rasul completed his Masters in Fine Arts from the University of Punjab in 1964, and then taught at Pinehills College, Ghora Gali for a year. It was at Illinois that he would develop his signature style, that of being a landscape painter. What sets his paintings apart however is that his paintings look like coloured prints of posters. The work, as seen in Untitled (Landscape) is flat, simplified and decorative, and this was deliberate on his part as he wished to search for a style that differed to the abstract that artists like Moyene Najmi and Raheel Akbar were propagating.' It was at North Illinois that he learnt the rudiments of Minimalism, as well as Japanese block-printing. While the USA showed him the way to Minimalism and opened his eyes to the popular art of Japanese tradition, Pakistan taught him how to adapt what he had learnt and acquired abroad to his own land.' (Akbar Naqvi, Image and Identity: Fifty years of Painting and Sculpture in Pakistan, Karachi, 1998, p.635.) He therefore painted simply designed scenes of Punjab village landscapes as seen in Untitled (Landscape) with areas of bright colours as seen in the foreground with the foliage and merged these with elements of gradient tones and light seen in the building which dominates the canvas.
