Sophie de Tott (Constantinople 1758-1848 Versailles) Portrait of a gentleman, bust-length, in a black coat and white cravat signed and dated 'Sophie Ctesse de Tott/1809' (centre right) oil on canvas 61 x 51.1cm (24 x 20 1/8in). framed: 81.2 x 71.2cm Footnotes: Constantinople-born portraitist Sophie de Tott, often known as Comtesse de Tott following her adoption by the French salon holder Comtesse de Tessé, grew up in Paris amongst members of the French aristocracy and leading intellectuals of the day, including Marie Antoinette, Lafayette, and Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, to whom de Tott sat for a portrait. Following the Revolution of 1789, de Tott fled Paris and lived in Switzerland, Germany, and finally London, where she exhibited a number of portraits at the Royal Academy between 1801 and 1804. She returned to France following the Revolution, where she settled until her death in Versailles.
