Edward Reginald Frampton, ROI (British, 1873-1923) Stark signed 'E. REGINALD FRAMPTON' (lower right) oil on canvas 17 3/4 x 19 3/4in (45.1 x 50.2cm) Footnotes: Largely known for his figural work and connected to the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood, this work is a unique example of Frampton's later career. Audience's desires for literary composition declined and a renewed interest in realism took hold. Frampton took advantaged of this trend and traveled to Sussex, Cumberland, the Channel Islands, Brittany, and the Bernese Oberland to seek suitable landscapes to paint. A sailor himself, Frampton's seascapes are love letters to nature. Frampton's influence from Burne-Jones and his own experience in stained glass are highly noticeable in this work. Stark's marriage of realism and romanticism create a mesmerizing landscape notable in the artist's oeuvre. Provenance J.G.
