Michael English and Nigel Waymouth 'Hapshash and the Coloured Coat' Middle Earth UK Concert Poster. 1968. Designed by Hapshash and the Coloured Coat and printed by David Joel. Original first printing poster advertising various concerts scheduled between March and April at the Middle Earth Club in Covent Garden, London. Featuring artists such as Tim Buckley, Roy Harper, The Family, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Crazy World of Arthur Brown, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, and others. 20 x 30 in. Footnotes: Michael English and Nigel Waymouth, also known as 'Hapshash and the Coloured Coat,' were a renowned graphic design duo and experimental musical partnership based out of London in the late 1960s. During this period, the duo crafted psychedelic posters for numerous English bands. Their artistic influence extended to designs for concerts at the UFO club and Saville Theatre, as well as contributions to the underground magazine Oz. The poster's design draws inspiration from Art Nouveau's decorative and eroticized designs, LSD-induced visions of vibrant colors, and post-war pop art. Above the two embracing lovers, elegantly entwined in foliage and reminiscent of Alphonse Mucha's style, two windows reveal contrasting worlds—one dark, one light. In eternal equilibrium, they symbolize the symmetry of space-time, mirroring the lovers who, independent yet inter-dependent, reflect one another. The poster's allegorical nature aligns with the characteristic style of Hapshash, known for infusing hidden meanings behind vibrant designs.
