AOR-2.183 'Trip or Freak' Halloween Winterland Concert Poster. 1967, October 31. Designed by Rick Griffin, Alton Kelley, and Stanley Mouse. Original first printing on thin white stock. Featuring the Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Co. (with Janis Joplin), and Quicksilver Messenger Service at Winterland Auditorium. The poster effectively captures the essence of Halloween by featuring horror-film actor Lon Chaney in The Phantom of the Opera (1925) as the central image. Griffin also accidentally omitted a letter from 'Quicksilver.' Legend has it that the 600 miniaturized renditions in the backdrop were cut up and used by some LSD dealers as 'acid blotters' for distributing doses. 14 x 26 in.
