NOBEL LAUREATES. UREY, HAROLD C. 1893-1981. A group of letters signed. Comprising nine typed letters signed by Urey and addressed to Cesare Emiliani (1922-1995), a geologist and paleontologist, and one typed note signed and addressed 'To Whom It May Concern,' certifying that Emiliani was at the time (July 7, 1953) employed by the Institute for Nuclear Studies at the University of Chicago. The nine letters are on the letterhead of the University of California, San Diego, and span the period 1969-1977. Accompanied by a carbon copy of Emiliani's response to one letter, and by two holiday cards, an invitation to the golden wedding anniversary celebration for Urey and his wife, and a black and white photo of Urey with Emiliani. Urey, a physical chemist, won the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1934 for the discovery of the hydrogen isotope deuterium and worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II.
