RILEY, JAMES WHITCOMB. 1849-1916. TAFT, LORADO. 1860-1936. The Riley Medal (two copies). Indianapolis: Hugh McK. Landon, Chairman of the Medal Committee, 1916. Bronze medals (diam. 2 11/16 in.) in thick cardboard mounts, in original hinged cardboard boxes with paper label to fronts, each with 12-page booklet in wrappers bound with string. Numbered, on front wrappers, 16 and 79 of 500 proofs struck in 1916. Boxes have staining to fronts, one (number 79) has top edge of front missing, pieces retained. The medal was commissioned by 'one hundred of the poet's admiring fellow townsmen [in Indianapolis]' in 1915 on the occasion of a banquet celebrating Riley's 66th birthday. Between that time and the issuing of the medal, Riley died on July 22, 1916.
