A RUTHERFORD B. HAYES PRESIDENTIAL SERVICE 'INDIAN BASKET WEAVE' AFTER-COFFEE PLATE. Haviland & Co. porcelain after-coffee plate with eagle design on underside of border. Design patented August 10, 1880, after Theo R. David. With green printed monogram mark, iron red fabrication mark, and blue patent mark. Diameter: 9 in (23 cm) Provenance: Rex Stark Catalog, July 1997, lot 395. This 'Indian basket weave' design after-coffee plate was created by artist Theodore Russell Davis as part of the larger service he created for First Lady Lucy Webb Hayes. The bulk of the service features native American flora and fauna (see lots 33 and 34), but this example features a raised basket weave design suggestive of native American craftwork. The complete Davis project incorporated 360 distinct designs for the 562-piece service.
