JOHN TYLER INVITES DOLLEY MADISON TO DINNER. TYLER, JOHN. 1790-1862. Autograph Document, partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, an invitation for 'Mrs. Madison' to attend dinner on Friday, bifoliate leaf (198 x 264 mm), [Washington], March 1, 1842 with original red wax seal, leaf creased and toned, browned at extremities. Dolley Madison remains one of the most popular of all American first ladies, best remembered for orchestrating the removal of the Stuart portrait of George Washington from the White House during the burning of Washington by the British in 1814. After the death of James Madison in 1836, she organized and copied her husband's papers before returning to Washington and resuming social activities. Here, President John Tyler personally invites the former first lady to dinner. Famously, in 1844, Mrs. Madison was with Tyler aboard the U.S.S. Princeton when a 'Peacemaker' cannon exploded while being fired, killing 6 people in attendance (but harming neither Tylor nor Madison).
