WILSON ARGUES FOR WARTIME AUSTERITY. WILSON, WOODROW. 1856-1924. Typed Letter Signed ('Woodrow Wilson') to Acting Secretary of the Treasury Oscar T. Crosby regarding the suspension of building operations, 1 p, 4to, Washington, October 13, 1917, on mint green White House stationery, with integral blank, some thumbsoiling and creasing edges. In part: 'May I not ask your consideration of the enclosed report to the Postmaster General, which I would be obliged if you would have returned to me when you have read it? / It occurs to me to suggest that it might be very wise indeed to suspend these building operations wherever it is possible to do so without detriment and loss to the Government; but you will form your own conclusions from the report itself.' Hard to know what this letter is in reference to, but construction of public buildings tapered off at the beginning of World War I and came to a complete stop when the U.S. entered the war in 1917.
