AN ABRAHAM LINCOLN SIGNED MILITARY COMMISSION. LINCOLN, ABRAHAM. 1807-1865. Document Signed ('Abraham Lincoln'), appointing William P. Hagadorn as Second Lieutenant in the Veteran Reserve Corps, 1 p, folio (480 x 380 mm), on vellum, partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, Washington, August 1, 1864, with engraved vignettes and red wax/blue wafer seal, some creasing and cockling, soiling, vignettes slightly faded, signature bisected by fold. Float mounted and framed overall to 740 x 635 mm. William Hagadorn (1843-1921) was the son of the editor and the grandson of the owner of the Troy Budget newspaper. He enlisted in the Union Army in August of 1862 along with his younger brother Francis. Company K of the New York 125th Volunteer Infantry. During his service he captured four 'Mosby's Raiders' while on picket duty at Centreville, VA. He was wounded at the Battle of Bristol Station in 1863, and was captured while in hospital. After he was exchanged, he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in the 22nd Regiment of the Veterans Reserve Corps, a corp of soldiers too injured to serve in the regular army but able to perform guard duty and other lighter tasks.
