A GEORGE WASHINGTON MILITARY APPOINTMENT. WASHINGTON, GEORGE. 1732-1799. Document Signed ('Go: Washington'), appointing Frederick Dalcho as Lieutenant in the Corps of Artillerists and Engineers, 1 p, folio (H: 445 mm; W: 377 mm), on vellum, partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, Philadelphia, April 11, 1795, with engraved vignettes and red wax/white wafer seal, document with horizontal and vertical creases from folding, staining to left vertical crease, signature bisected by fold. A fine example of the earliest U.S. military officer's appointments signed by our first President. For those of us who have seen these issued by other administrations, it is startling to see Washington's name emblazoned across the top. Later iterations just list the 'President of the United States of America,' elevating the office above the man who serves in it. Frederick Dalcho (1770-1836) was a physician who served in the U.S. Military before becoming an editor of the Charleston Courier and later entering the ministry of the Episcopal Church.
