A BENJAMIN HARRISON PRESIDENTIAL SERVICE PLACE SETTING. A Limoges porcelain 5-piece luncheon place setting, comprising a luncheon plate, a salad plate, a bread-and-butter plate, and a teacup and saucer, with various printed factory marks. With a gilt rim, blue border with gilt corn design, federal eagle surrounded by 44 stars on salad, luncheon and bread-and-butter plates; teacup with eagle on side of cup. Size of luncheon plate: 9 ½ in (24 cm) During the Harrison administration, a new state dining service of 288 pieces was ordered in December of 1892. Caroline Harrison was inspired by the Lincoln administration's choice of arms and color scheme. Instead of the bold purple border, however, she chose a dark blue border highlighted with a corn and goldenrod motif suggestive of the Harrison's home state of Indiana, and a circle of 44 stars (representing the 44 states) surrounding the federal eagle with his wings outspread. This is a fine setting of the Harrison china, exhibiting some of the variation in the blue rims typical of the set.
