1972 Triumph 649cc T120R Bonneville Registration no. AKV 147K Frame no. HE30120 Engine no. T120 DU6653 Triumph entered the 1960s with its larger twin-cylinder machines recognizably similar to the first Speed Twin of 1938. Unitary construction of the engine and gearbox was already a feature of the 350cc and 500cc twins though, and this innovation duly appeared on the 650s in 1963. The café racer's favourite since its launch in 1959 thanks to its lusty acceleration and a top speed approaching 120mph, the Bonneville continued in this new form as Triumph's top-of-the-range sports roadster. Its engine, chassis and cycle parts were updated year by year, and by the decade's end the T120R Bonneville had arrived at what most enthusiasts agree is the model's ultimate incarnation. Today these late, pre-'oil-in-frame' Bonnevilles are becoming increasingly sought after by collectors. The current vendor acquired this Bonnie in 1980 from the original owner. In 1987/88 a small overhaul was carried out which consisted of rebored cylinders, new pistons and rings and the frame /swinging arm powder coated. The vendor advises the top-end was reconditioned (valves and guides), new clutch fitted, carburettors ultrasonic cleaned, tyres and brakes were replaced in the past few years. Used regularly in the summer around the Lake District and Pennines this T120R has had its oil changed and filter cleaned annually. It should be noted a knocking noise from the engine has recently started therefore prospective bidders must satisfy themselves in regards to the machines mechanical condition. Accompanying documentation consists of old/Current V5/V5C; expired MoTs (most recent 2018); 'TMS of Nottingham' receipts; 1984 Classic Mechanics article and a Triumph owners workshop manual (both in distressed condition). Offered with key Footnotes: All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.
