The Darnley Jewel was purchased by the Queen from Horace Walpole's Strawberry Hill collection in 1842. It is believed to have been originally commissioned by Lady Margaret Douglas, Countess of Lennox for her husband Matthew Stewart, Earl of Lennox and Regent of Scotland. Margaret was the mother of Lord Darnley, the second husband of Mary, Queen of Scots. The jewel remains to this day one of the most important early jewels in the Royal Collection.
