Lewis after Maclise, printed by McQueen and marked 'proof', on thick paper, some spotting, publisher's pictorial boards (?designed by Owen Jones) printed in green and gold, Westleys & Clark binder's ticket in side lower cover, plain wrapper (watermaked 'J. Smith Sunnydale Superfine'), preserved in later solander box [Ray 29; McLean VPBP, p.13 and p.30], 4to (265 x 185mm.), Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, 1846 Footnotes: FINE BRIGHT COPY OF 'ONE OF THE FINEST COVERS OF THE EARLY VICTORIAN PERIOD' according to Ruari McLean, who attributes the design of it to Owen Jones. Gordon Ray notes that the overall production of the book is 'a landmark in the history of style', with the illustrator Daniel Maclise's treatment of illustration and text as a unit, and the introduction to England of effects first realised by German illustrators of the 1830s and early 1840s. Amongst loosely inserted ephemera are letters signed by Percy Muir and Ruari McLean.
