VIGERS IN PEN AND WATERCOLOUR with full-page illustration on opening leaf, 2 pages with elaborate borders incorporating flowers, grape vines, peacock, owl, butterfly and trailing foliage, and large design on final page with flowers and two birds, a small leaf design on every page, contemporary red morocco gilt, sides with single line border on covers, gilt lettered on spine, trailing flower design in gilt on dentelles (?in style of Guild of Women Binders), g.e., extremities slightly rubbed, a few small indents, small 4to, signed on first and last leaf 'A.F.V. 1910' Footnotes: Allan Francis Vigers (1858-1921) trained as an architect, but was best known (like William Morris) as a designer of textiles, furniture and especially wallpaper for the likes of Jeffrey & Co. and Liberty. He joined the Art Workers Guild in 1903, and exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition in 1910.'The architect Allan Francis Vigers took a highly individualistic approach to pattern design, informed by his skills as an illuminator... He specialized in intricate florals, composed of a mass of small flower heads, mounted like jewels on white or dark-blue backgrounds. At once naturalistic and highly artificial, his patterns featured typical English garden flowers... simply and accurately depicted, but arranged in consciously artful synchronized formations' (Lesley Jackson, Twentieth Century Pattern Design, Princeton, 2002).
