RIMMEL (EUGENE) The Book of Perfumes, fourth edition, AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed 'Frank Hayward Esq. with the author's compts.' on front free endpaper, frontispiece and upwards of 250 plates and illustrations (one a chromolithograph) by Bourdelle, Thomas, and others, publisher's decorative pictorial purple cloth gilt by Bone & Son (with label), g.e., pale mauve DUST-JACKET printed with similar design to binding on upper cover and spine (spine toned, a few small marginal tears), 8vo, Chapman and Hall, 1865 Footnotes: AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY IN AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE 1860s DUST-JACKET. 'Because of their obviously ephemeral nature very few [1860s dust-jackets] have survived... Any dustwrapper before about 1885 ought to be recorded, perhaps on some central registry...' (Robin de Beaumont, 'Nineteenth Century Publisher's Bindings 1820-1900', The Private Library. Quarterly Journal, Fourth series, Vol. 9, No. 1, 1996). This copy [wrongly stating 'second edition'] is illustrated, de Beaumont noting that on this book 'the puce cloth is notorious for fading to almost white [but] That the exceptional condition (literally as new) indicates the wrapper has been with this book from the beginning'. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: • • Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium.
