'Because of their obviously ephemeral nature very few [1860s dust-jackets] have survived... Any dustwrapper before about 1885 ought to be recorded, perhaps on some central registry...' (Robin de Beaumont, 'Nineteenth Century Publisher's Bindings 1820-1900', The Private Library. Quarterly Journal, Fourth series, Vol. 9, No. 1, 1996). This copy [wrongly stating 'second edition'] is illustrated, de Beaumont noting that on this book 'the puce cloth is notorious for fading to almost white [but] That the exceptional condition (literally as new) indicates the wrapper has been with this book from the beginning'.
