RUSKIN, MORRIS AND COCKERELL RUSKIN (JOHN) The Elements of Drawing in Three Letters to Beginners, second edition, SYDNEY COCKERELL'S COPY, WITH AN ORIGINAL PEN AND INK DRAWING BY WILLIAM MORRIS, approximately 20 notes by Cockerell in the margins, the drawing of a leaved plant (captioned by Cockerell 'Copy by William Morris of fig. 6', 120 x 62mm.) is pasted on page facing title, light spotting to opening few pages, publisher's green cloth, joints refurbished, 8vo, Smith, Elder, 1857 Footnotes: A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY LINKING RUSKIN, MORRIS AND SYDNEY COCKERELL, the side-notes in Cockerell's hand cross-referencing the text to other works by Ruskin showing his careful reading of the book. As a young man Cockerell's 'absorption in Ruskin's political and artistic writings, emboldened him to begin a correspondence initiated by a gift of shells from his collection. In 1887 he visited Ruskin at Brantwood... and a friendship developed rapidly...' (ODNB). In 1886 Cockerell then 'met William Morris, his other great hero, initially through socialist interests but increasingly through the work of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings', a friendship that led to Morris employing him to catalogue his library, and then act as secretary to the Kelmscott Press. Provenance: A. Ditchfield, inscription dated November 1858; Sydney Cockerell (1867–1962), ownership inscription dated 5 April 1889 on title-page.
