TENNYSON (ALFRED) Enoch Arden... Illustrated by Arthur Hughes, EMILY TENNYSON'S COPY, on thick paper, half-title, frontispiece portrait of the author, wood-engraved illustrations by Hughes, additional vellum sheet bound in, occasional light spotting, fore-edge of title creased, front endpapers loose, original full red morocco by T. Aitken, the sides with elaborate all over design featuring bell, fish, chain, anchor and shell devices (upper cover), and bell, butterfly, wheat and windmill devices (lower cover), spine tooled in 6 compartments within raised bands, g.e. [cf. McLean VPBB, pp.134-35], large 8vo, Edward Moxon & Co., 1866; and another copy, bound in blue cloth with same decoration (2) Footnotes: Seemingly specially bound in morocco gilt, to the same design as the trade cloth binding, for Alfred Tennyson's wife Emily. Illustrated by the Pre-Raphaelite artist Arthur Hughes, Enoch Arden was his 'single masterpiece for adults' (Goldman, Victorian Illustration, 1996, p.53). Provenance: Emily Tennyson, her name beneath coat of arms painted on inserted leaf of vellum sheet bound before the half-title.
