Aitken, the sides with elaborate all over design featuring bell, fish, chain, anchor and shell devices (upper cover), and bell, butterfly, wheat and windmill devices (lower cover), spine tooled in 6 compartments within raised bands, g.e. [cf. McLean VPBB, pp.134-35], large 8vo, Edward Moxon & Co., 1866; and another copy, bound in blue cloth with same decoration (2) Footnotes: Seemingly specially bound in morocco gilt, to the same design as the trade cloth binding, for Alfred Tennyson's wife Emily. Illustrated by the Pre-Raphaelite artist Arthur Hughes, Enoch Arden was his 'single masterpiece for adults' (Goldman, Victorian Illustration, 1996, p.53). Provenance: Emily Tennyson, her name beneath coat of arms painted on inserted leaf of vellum sheet bound before the half-title.
