Jamini Roy (Indian, 1887-1972) Untitled (Makhan Chor) printed lower right and edition 196/500 lower left serigraph on paper 35.3 x 52cm (13 7/8 x 20 1/2in). Footnotes: Provenance Archer Graphic Studio, Ahmedabad Lots 8 and 9 depict baby Krishna and his mother Yashoda, as the famed Machan Chor, or 'butter thief.' Whilst Krishna was stealing butter in the image in lot 13, in the present lot, he can be seen facing his mother, being admonished. Krishna is offering his mother the butter, whilst Yashoda has a rope in her hands, which she will use to punish Krishna. As with all of Jamini's compositions, this work has all the characteristics that he is known for. One of the defining characteristics of Roy's style is his use of bold and confident lines. His strokes are deliberate and assertive, creating a strong sense of structure and form in his compositions. Roy's lines are often thick and heavy, outlining the contours of his subjects with a sense of clarity and precision. This emphasis on line imparts a sense of vitality and energy to his paintings.
