Mit diesem berühmten Motiv begann Marc Chagall seine Bilderreise durch das Leben der Ruth. Es zeigt Naemi (Noomi), die Schwiegermutter Ruths, in inniger Verbundenheit mit ihren beiden Schwiegertöchtern. Naemi, die durch eine Hungersnot ihren Ehemann und später auch ihre zwei Söhne verloren hatte, war nun allein mit Ruth und Orpa und besorgt um das Leben ihrer beiden Schwiegertöchter. Sie möchte beide in ihre Heimat schicken, damit diese wieder heiraten konnten. Orpa gehorcht der Bitte Naemis und geht fort. Ruth bleibt in Betlehem bei ihrer Schwiegermutter alleine zurück. Ruth macht hiermit ihrem Namen alle Ehre, der für "Freundin" steht.

It shows Naomi (Noomi), the mother-in-law of Ruth, in intimate connection with her two daughters-in-law. Naemi, who had lost her husband and later her two sons due to a famine, was now alone with Ruth and Orpa and worried about the lives of her two daughters-in-law. She wants to send both of them to their homeland so they could marry again. Orpa obeys Naemi's request and leaves. Ruth remains alone in Bethlehem with her mother-in-law. Ruth hereby lives up to her name, which stands for "friend".
